July 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

the rocky mountain synod needed posters designed yesterday to go to print for this year’s middle school and high school youth gatherings.

fear not, for after receiving the e-mails in the morning, i was able to get the posters designed, refined and sent out to the committee chairs by mid-afternoon.

FEAR NOT

May 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

i was asked yesterday to come up with a shirt design as soon as possible for the 2009 rocky mountain synod youth gathering. they had already commissioned a design firm in florida for the job, but one of the planning team members was incredibly dissatisfied with multiple designs from the firm and thus asked me. however, she needed the design by monday for the upcoming synod assembly.

the msyg theme is “fear not” and the key verse for the gathering is isaiah 43:1, which says, in short, “fear not for i have redeemed you. i have called you by name. you are mine.”

with that in mind, here’s the design i came up with.

TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS

April 26, 2008 · No Comments

the other night i finished up binding my edition of pages (3 of 13) into a custom box for the collaborative bookmaking project themed around the phrase “under your pants.”

as a whole, the different layers of the box represent jeans, boxers, and skin respectively and have a “saggy pants, punk rock, skater aesthetic” when closed.

this tri-fold box is held shut by a stylized card stock belt that shows a simple drawing of a zipper. to get into the box, the belt & zipper must be pulled down. then, the sides fold out from the center to reveal a complete paisley patterned top of the box. this top then gets pulled down, and the viewer is inside the flesh colored box

once inside the pants, a preface awaits the viewer explaining the effects that blink-182’s album “take off your pants and jacket” had on my teenage years. both the packaging and music greatly inspired my love of album art design and my persistent dreams of becoming a punk rock star. just as the packaging held the true art of blink-182’s album, this box merely holds the true art inside of it.

the preface is then followed by a screen printed cover page and the 12 editioned pages of the book, each designed by a different artist. at the end of the 14 pages total, the three symbols from the “take off your pants and jacket” album cover are inlayed on the inside bottom of the box. they are the only direct reference to the conveniently titled album, as even the preface never specifically states which album contained the defining anthems to my high school days.

the other 12 editions of pages are bound differently; each by a contributing artist. one edition, bound by mia semingson, will become part of the university of colorado’s special collection of artist books.
